After Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743). Jean Charles de Watteville. Oil on canvas, of the Marqués de Conflans (1605-1670) who was appointed by Philip IV of Spain as ambassador to the Court of Saint James in 1660 when Charles II of England ascended the throne. His appointment did not last long, however, for he was involved in an incident which cost him his ambassadorship. On October 10, 1661, the French and Spanish ambassadors in London sent delegations to welcome the new Swedish ambassador, but the delegations became embroiled in a fight which resulted in dead and wounded, the Spanish having got somewhat the better of the French (Samuel Pepys noted the confrontation in his diary). Louis XIV was outraged and declared his intention to declare war on Spain if the culpable parties were not punished. Thus ended de Watteville's ambassadorship to the English court. In 1666, under the regency of Mariana of Austria, he was appointed ambassador extraordinary to Rome, where he participated in the negotiations for the defense of Franche-Comté, and in 1668, he became ambassador to Portugal, where he died in 1670. Shortly before his death, Queen Mariana made him a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This narrows the time he could have had his portrait painted wearing the Golden Fleece to 1670.

Canvas relined; 33½ x 25"; framed: 40½ x 32". Label on stretcher identifying the sitter as de Watteville. The half length portrait shows de Watteville wearing armor with lace chemise, brown cape, wig and the order of the Golden Fleece. The painting was executed by a follower of Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), a French Baroque painter of Catalan origin, who was considered the most important portraitist of the period. He was famous for his portraits of Louis XIV and the royals of Europe. Fine condition.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 10,000.

Amiry, Teimur. Pocket Change. An unframed still life of four coins, by internationally acclaimed painter Teimur Amiry, highlighted by a penny standing on its side adjacent to a folded upright dollar bill. This piece is hand painted by the artist over a photo print (this process is known as an oil graphic) on a textured paper that resembles a canvas, and then stretched and attached to a hardwood frame. It measures 11" x 14" so it can accommodate a variety of ready made frames.

Teimur Amiry is recognized throughout the world, especially in the U.S., Italy, France, Germany and England for his Modern Renaissance paintings. As a young man Mr. Amiry travelled throughout Europe, spending most of his time in Italy where his work was lauded by the Italian media as the "Reinvention of the genius of Leonardo DiVinci". He owned three galleries in Beverly Hills over a forty year period (Beverly-Wilshire Hotel, Rodeo Drive, and Beverly Drive). His many high profile clients include Sophia Loren, Ringo Starr, Kirk Douglas, and Tony Bennett. Examples of his work were left in the estates of Howard Hughes, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. Amiry's three dimensional images against dark velvety backgrounds are so real that they practically jump off the canvas. His trademark is a faint image of himself hidden somewhere in his paintings.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.

Anonymous. Idyllic English Countryside. Monumental and stunning, mid -19th Century oil on canvas, unsigned but a work of significant accomplishment. Very much in keeping with the European masters of the early to mid 1800s in particular, Thomas Pritt. Idyllic scenes of the timeless English countryside featuring small holding farmers with their happy families were common in British paintings of the late 18th and early 19th century at a time when the country was experiencing devastating changes brought on by the Industrial Revolution and modern capitalism. Canvas measure approximately 40" x 60" framed elegantly to 50" x 60" in wood gilt. In the image a farmer herds two cows and several head of sheep down a road, aside, a family has just gathered flowers under a massive oak while goats and chicken feed, a farm house and barn just in the distance. Incredible detail and a remarkable command of light distinguishes this work. Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Buyer responsible for 3rd party shipping.
